The Padres signed Greg Maddux to a one year deal worth $10 million, with a $6 million player option for 2008, which could turn into $10 million, if Maddux pitches in 200 innings.

Maddux is a good addition to any team, especially one who will most likely be making a run at the playoffs. The Padres will bring back a solid team and will be looking to win the NL West once again. Maddux joins a Padres rotation that includes talented young pitchers such as Jake Peavy, Clay Hensley, and Chris Young.

Adding Maddux is not only adding a quality starting pitcher, but it is also like adding another pitching coach. Maddux?s value goes far beyond the playing field, as he will be very helpful in bringing along this young Padre rotation.

Although Maddux?s numbers have certainly declined the past few years, he still had a respectable season last year while playing for the Cubs and Dodgers. Maddux went a combined 15-14 with a 4.20 ERA and pitched much better while playing for a better Dodgers team then he did playing for one of the worst teams in the league in the Cubs.

Even at age 41, Maddux is a guy you can count on to pitch a lot of games, as he is rarely injured, along with giving you a lot of quality starts and an extra pitching coach. Since 1987, Maddux has thrown less then 200 innings only once, and that was back in 2002 where he threw 199.1 innings.

My Grade: A-

How can you go wrong with signing a guy like Maddux? He is going to give you a lot of quality starts and will be a great resource for every pitcher on the team. At $10 million, would you rather have Greg Maddux or Ted Lilly?
