Brad Penny would do just about anything to get the second inning back in the Diamondbacks 3-2 win over Los Angeles Monday. Penny surrendered his three earned runs in that long inning, which finally ended with a double play, ending the pitcher’s misery.

RF J.D. Drew gave the Dodgers the early 1-0 lead after grounding out to score CF Kenny Lofton from third, who had reached on RF Shawn Green’s error. Los Angeles added what would be their final run of the game in the second, as C Sandy Alomar Jr. boosted his average yet again on a single to score 1B Nomar Garciaparra.

The dagger of the game came in the second. LF Luis Gonzalez started the inning off with a single to center. 1B Conor Jackson, Green, and C Johnny Estrada followed with consecutive doubles to continue the D-Back’s three-run inning. With the bases loaded, Penny was eager to get at least one out, but pitcher Claudio Vargas had other plans. The right-hander whacked a single to right but only scoring Green.

Penny was handed his first loss of the season, but didn’t allow a run from the second inning on. Vargas went six innings for Arizona and shut down LA’s offense, giving up seven hits.

Game Notes-Dodgers called up RP Jonathon Broxton and LP Joe Beimel. Broxton will take Lance Carter’s spot, who was sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas, while Beimel replaces Hong-Chih Kuo.

Final Score: Dodgers 2, Diamondbacks 3
