Dodgers’ pitcher Odalis Perez came into the final game of the series against the Astros with three wins. But 1B Lance Berkman and company absolutely destroyed Perez and racked him up for six runs on eleven hits. Wandy Rodriguez gave up two runs and allowed five hits to Los Angeles. He added another win to his pitching record, now at 4-0.
The Dodgers were without Jeff Kent, Rafael Furcal and Kenny Lofton, all three being rested due to the extra inning game they played on Wednesday in the loss. The positive side of the three being absent from the lineup is a rest before the club heads to San Diego on Friday.
C Brad Ausmus put the Astros ahead first in the second inning on a single to right that scored SS Chris Burke. Perez was far better off walking Ausmus to challenge pitcher Rodriguez rather than go after the catcher. Three more runs would score for Houston in the third to put them up by four.
With Ausmus on board, CF Willy Taveras doubled to left field to score 2B Craig Biggio. The inning wasn’t over for Perez, as it was just about to get worse. Berkman stepped to the plate and connected on a full count pitch from Perez for a two-run homer, nearly clearing it out of Minute Maid Park to left.
The next inning was the fourth, and it brought more misfortune to Los Angeles when Houston cashed in a couple runs to give them a now six run lead. Finally in the fifth, CF Jason Repko ended their shutout as he took Rodriguez deep to left field for a two-run shot. The Astros added two in the fifth and seventh innings, but the Dodgers had the bases loaded in the ninth in their last at-bats.
Only able to score three, the Dodgers came up short in the top of the ninth and lost two out of three to Houston.
Final Score: Dodgers 5, Astros 8
