The Dodgers couldn’t have asked for a better outing by Jae Seo, as the young South Korean went six innings and allowed two runs. But the San Francisco Giants got the best of Seo and the Dodgers when they won the series Sunday night, beating their rivals 2-0.
Both teams’ pitchers were brilliant through the first five innings, making it an automatic pitching duel. The sixth inning would be the only time runs came across home plate. SS Omar Vizquel and 1B Mark Sweeney were both aboard as Seo was ready to deliver.
With Vizquel on third ready to go, Seo balked when he threw it to 1B James Loney, who was holding the runner Sweeney. The Giants’ Gold Glove shortstop was awarded home and gave San Francisco the 1-0 lead. But the inning wasn’t over as 2B Ray Durham stepped to the plate.
Durham then singled up the middle, barely missing the glove of 2B Jeff Kent. The Dodgers were unable to score anything against Brad Hennessey, who threw a three-hitter and went six innings. Los Angeles left seven runners on base, falling to a record of six wins and seven losses.
The seventh inning didn’t bring any runs from either side, but it did leave a mark on Kent, who was nailed by a Hennessey changeup to the left side of his head. The following inning Tim Hamulack would retaliate when his fastball hit the heavily padded elbow of LF Barry Bonds. Hamulack was then ejected by the home plate umpire.
Final Score: Dodgers 0, Giants 2
