The Pittsburgh Pirates were able to rally in the sixth inning to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6 on Tuesday, securing their second win of the season. Dodgers’ pitcher Jae Seo allowed five runs on seven hits in his starting debut with the club, and lasted five innings before being picked up in relief by RP Lance Carter.
Los Angeles led off the first inning with another outburst of three runs, with the first one coming on RF J.D. Drew’s single, which scored SS Rafael Furcal. Drew wouldn’t stay on the bases for long as LF Ricky Ledee, who started over Jose Cruz Jr. due to flu symptoms, knocked a home run to dead center field, giving the Dodgers an early 3-0 lead.
Jim Tracy’s Pirates would answer back in their first at-bats when RF Jeromy Burnitz took Seo’s pitch deep and homered to right field with LF Jason Bay aboard, shedding LA’s lead to one run.
The third inning brought some pop to the Dodger lineup as 3B Bill Mueller hit his first of what would be a multi-homer day. Scoring on the shot was Ledee and a two-run Dodgers lead was in place.
Yet again though, Pittsburgh showed another mini comeback in the third when SS Jack Wilson singled in CF Chris Duffy, making Seo obviously uncomfortable. In the Dodgers fifth, Mueller blasted his second homer of the day into the right field seats, which was the last run LA would get in the game.
After going five, Seo was taken out and replaced by Carter, who did anything but give relief in his two inning appearance. C Ryan Doumit and Wilson blasted solo homers in the fifth, putting the Pirates within one of Los Angeles. The sixth inning saw 1B Jack Wilson homer, tying the game. Then Doumit’s sac fly ultimately won the ball game for Pittsburgh.
Final Score: Dodgers 6, Pirates 7
