Game Recap #4. Angels 4, Yankees 1

Emotions were flying high today as the Angels took on the New York Yankees for their home opener. The Angels returned to Anaheim from a 3-game road trip to kick off the season where they ended up losing two out of the three games. That wouldn?t lower the Halo?s spirits though as they beat the Yankees 4-1.

Kelvim Escobar faced the daunting New York Yankees lineup and was remarkable. Escobar gave the Angels their first quality start of the season, and what fine timing. He pitched six strong innings holding the Yankees to one run on six hits. Jason Giambi was Escobar?s one-thousandth-career strike out victim.

Even when Escobar came out of the game, there was no drop off. The bullpen showed why they are going to be feared this season as they pitched three shutout innings not allowing a single hit.

Orlando Cabrera hit his second homerun of the season in the first inning scoring Chone Figgins who led the game off with a double. After the first the Angels would only add two more runs. An rbi single from Darin Erstad and Juan Rivera would give Kelvim and the staff a comfortable four runs.

Closing the door on the ?Bronx Bombers? was Francisco Rodriguez. He picked up his 2nd save of the very young season by going 1,2,3 in the 9th inning.

Tomorrow the Halos will take on Yankee ace Randy Johnson. On the hill for the Angels will be young pitching sensation Ervin Santana. The Angels look to win the series while the Yankees try to play catch up.

Player of the game ? Kelvim Escobar and the bullpen. Combined they held the Yankees to only 1 run on 6 hits.

Disappointment ? It?s hard to say there was a disappointment in a victory, but there was one. Vladimir Guerrero going 0 for 4 is disappointing. Reluctantly, the other hitters stepped up.

Next game: April 8th, Saturday vs. New York Yankees

On the mound: Ervin Santana vs. Randy Johnson (1-0, 1.29 ERA)

Angels record: 2-2
