Game Recap #2. Angels 8, Mariners 10

In his first start of the season, John Lackey was unsuccessful. He pitched only four innings and game up 5 earned runs on 9 hits. The bullpen did solid again today, well, with the exception of Esteban Yan. Hector Carrasco pitched 3 shutout innings striking out 3 and looked real good in his Angel debut. Yan pitched one inning giving up three earned runs. Why was Yan pitching in a one-run game anyways?

Defensively, it was worse than Yan’s pitching performance. They committed 4 errors! Vladimir Guerrero threw the ball to third base and it skidded away from Chone Figgins. Figgins and Adam Kennedy got their errors by not being able to make a good throw to first base, which is normally a routine play and Orlando Cabrera could not catch a ball that was thrown directly at his chest.

Offensively, the Angels did excellent. Juan Rivera, Garret Anderson, and Tim Salmon all went deep to collect their first homeruns of the season. Also, Anderson and Rivera each had 3 RBI in the game. Tim “the King Fish” Salmon had a pinch-hit homerun in the top of the 9th inning to start an Angel rally. Salmon looks like he is in good shape and shows he still has his power from his earlier playing days. If the Angels struggle to put runs on the board, they’ll know who to go look at.

This game was abnormal for the Angels as they are usually really good at defense and shaky at offense. If they can ever play a game where both sides are on, I’ll feel sorry for the team they play that night.

Tomorrow Jeff Weaver will make his debut as an Angel. He’ll take on former Angel Jarrod Washburn.

Player of the game: Garret Anderson – from disappointment the first game to player of the game the next. GA went 2 for 5 with a homerun and 3 RBI

Disappointment – John Lackey – giving up 5 runs in 4 innings pitched. The other disappointment was the team defense committing 4 errors!

Next game: April 5th, Wednesday vs. Seattle Mariners

On the mound: Jeff Weaver vs. Jarrod Washburn

Angels record: 1-1
