 The way the Mariners were swinging on Tuesday, Bo Derek could have pitched for the Yankees.
Instead, Carl Pavano threw his first shutout in a Yankee uniform and was backed by a sudden offensive outburst by Jason Giambi as the Yanks stormed to their 10th straight victory.
Lost in the day was Alex Rodriguez who belted his major league leading 13th Home Run and 39th RBI. Last year he struggled and the New York press ate him up. Perhaps this year ARod is thriving due to the fact that he?s not the hot topic in the Big Apple and is quietly putting together his typical offensive season.
Giambi has taken the media honors since his leaked testimony during the off-season. Last week he declined a trip to the Minors to find his swing and all of New York groaned.
On Tuesday he had three hits--including a sixth inning homer to raise his average to .227. In the process he?s ensured himself of some more at bats and maybe a break from the New York press.
?The bat?s coming through the strike zone a lot freer,? said Giambi. ?I?m not so tied up. It?s definitely paying off.?
Behind ARod, Giambi and Pavano the Yankees extended their winning streak to 10 games, their longest in seven years. Although the streak is impressive it still falls nine games short of the club record set back in 1947.
My Dad taught me something about baseball years ago. If you pitch well, get timely hits, and score more runs--you win. It looks like the Yankees have finally remembered this and that doesn?t bode well for the rest of baseball. |
