Baltimore ? The Orioles tied their season-high six game losing streak falling to the Texas Rangers, 4-2, last night at Camden Yards.
In five innings pitcher Daniel Cabrera gave up three hits and five runs. He was also good for seven walks, a career high.
Perhaps his biggest error was failing to cover first base during a potential double play. Ranger Mark Texeira hit a bouncer to O?s first baseman Rafael Palmeiro. Palmeiro threw to Tejada at second gaining the out. But Cabrera never moved to cover first. Tejada was left holding the ball and Rod Barajas scored for Texas.
Baltimore also struggled to bring home runners in scoring position. The first four innings saw the Orioles leave the bases loaded twice. Overall they were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The hitting just was not there. Sammy Sosa went 0-for-3 ending his eight game hitting streak. Javy Lopez was 0-for-4 in his first game after two months on the disabled list.
The Orioles also lost out on Phil Nevin. The first basemen for the San Diego Padres blocked a trade that would have sent him to Baltimore and pitcher Sydney Ponson to San Diego.
Manager Lee Mazzilli has given the team a break from batting practice today. They are to report 90 minutes before game time. "We're going to lay off the pregame hitting. These are hot days, and I think we're trying a little bit too hard," he said.
Game two of the four game series is tonight at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. |
