J.P. Arencibia - C

J.P. Arencibia Scouting Report

- Arencibia was selected 21st overall in the 2007 MLB Draft out of the University of Tennessee.

- He was born January 5th, 1986, is listed at 6'1", 210 lbs and bats right-handed.

- While Arencibia hit 27 homers in 510 at bats in 2008, almost half and half exactly for each in high Single-A and Double-A, he struck out 101 times and walked just 18 times. That's Matt Wieters' kind of pop with Pedro Cerrano kind of contact and plate patience.

- He has excellent balance and a quick bat through the zone.

- Arencibia is a bright ballplayer and a natural leader, who can clearly handle the intangible aspects of catching.

- He is mainly a pull hitter, but he can clearly hit the ball out of the yard going to right field.

- He hit for an OPS of .782 OPS, four homers and eight doubles in 95 at bats during the Arizona Fall League.

- Arencibia was a member of the USA National Team in 2006, along with David Price and Pedro Alvarez.

- Arencibia has a good arm and has nice athleticism, but is relatively average defensively. He could end up at first base in the long run.
