The Yankees seem to have a swing for the fences mentality when it comes to building a farm system. Given their resources and expectations they place on their major league talent, it is really the only strategy worth using. Mediocre talent will never really get a chance to play in the big leagues because they will instead find All-Star caliber talent via free agency to fill their positions of need.

The strategy has paid off with Joba Chamberlain and I would also throw Robinson Cano into that category, but this version of the Yankees has decidedly been built via free agency and trades.

Nobody has given up on Philip Hughes and there are several high ceiling prospects that can change that course.

Top Yankees Prospects

1. Jesus Montero - C

If Montero continues to improve defensively behind the plate, he will become one of the best sluggers at the position in the game.

2. Austin Jackson - CF

Jackson is a phenomenal athlete who can become a very good five-tool player if he decreases his propensity for strikeouts.

3. Dellin Betances - RHP

Betances is nicknamed Baby Unit due to his 6'8" frame. If he stays healthy and becomes more consistent with his mechanics, Betances could become a front end starter.

4. Andrew Brackman - RHP

Brackman was the 30th overall pick in the 2007 MLB Draft and slid because of his looming Tommy John surgery. He's healthy now and at 6'10", with a superb fastball and knuckle-curve, expectations are still high.

5. Arodys Vizcaino - RHP

Vizcaino has the velocity, strikeout rate and command to make him an extremely intriguing young arm.

Other Players Worth Watching

This list of players includes some players that will likely see action in the bigs and could become serviceable players, but do not have the ceilings of the players listed above.
