Matt Wieters - C

Matt Wieters Scouting Report

- Matt Wieters was the fifth overall selection in the 2007 MLB Draft. He was widely considered the best prospect in the draft, but many teams had concerns about whether or not they would be able to sign him due to his agent Scott Boras.

- Born on May 21st, 1986 in South Carolina.

- Wieters is a 6'4", 225 pound switchhitter. He is an excellent contact hitter, shows great patience and uses all ares of the field. Wieters has been better from the right side of the plate, but he has also been excellent from the left.

- He was a first-team All-America selection as a sophomore and a junior at Georgia Tech. Wieters hit .358/.480/.592 as a junior in 218 at bats.

- In high Single-A and Double-A during the 2008 season, Witers hit for an OPS of 1.054 with 27 homers in 437 at bats. He struck out 76 times whiles walking 82 and he decreased his strikeouts in Double-A.

- Wieters is a very good defensive catcher, but his weight and lack of athleticism could make him an eventual first base candidate. He is working hard on his ability to call pitches, has a strong arm and is an incredible leader. Nevertheless, it is hard to imagine Wieters catching into his mid-30's, but that's still a decade of Baltimore having one of the two or three best catchers in the game.

- His father was a member of the Braves and White Sox but never advanced beyond Double-A.

- Ranked 1st by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009.

- Though these expectations are extremely lofty and ambitious, anything short of a perennial All-Star career will be a disappointing surprise.
