The Opsera is a statistic RealGM Executive Editor Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA).

In order to determine the Opsera rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number.

All statistics are through Sunday, July 13

Rankings from last week are in parenthesizes.

1. (1) Oakland Athletics – 4.20

The Athletics are first for the eighth-straight week. They have the best record in baseball and rank second in both runs scored and ERA.

2. (2) Los Angeles Dodgers – 3.98

Dan Haren and Hyun-Jin Ryu are holding the rotation back. Zack Greinke, Josh Beckett and Clayton Kershaw all have sub-2.75 ERAs.

3. (3) Washington Nationals – 3.91

Washington could use a bat for a stretch run. They have the lowest ERA (3.08) in the game, but rank 15th in runs scored.

4. (5) Detroit Tigers – 3.81

An early run in the second half could end the race in the American League Central. The Tigers have the largest margin (6.5) of any division leader.

5. (4) Los Angeles Angels – 3.77

Oakland has dominated baseball's first half, but after winning 12 of 14 games the Angels are just 1.5 games back in the AL West.
