Over the next several weeks RealGMBaseball will be holding our 2014 Major League Baseball ‘Be The GM’ Contest to determine which player would be the best selection to build a franchise around.

The contest, which is being brought to you by the Original Retro Brand, is described and previewed here: RealGM’s 2014 ‘Be The GM’ Contest. You’ll want to check out the link for rules on how to enter to win a $50 Retro Brand gift card and to see the full contest schedule.

Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies are featured in Wednesday’s matchup. Voting will extend through June 30.

It's hard to believe that McCutchen, the reigning National League MVP, is just 27 years old. A career .298/.385/.492 hitter, he has been the face of a baseball resurgence in Pittsburgh. An All-Star for three consecutive years, he appears headed for Minneapolis next month (.317/.424/.525).

He is an above-average hitter, but McCutchen is one of the most valuable players in the game today when you consider the complete package. He has ranked in the top three among NL WAR leaders in each of the last two seasons. The outfielder ranks 38th among all active players in WAR with 30.5 over his 809 games.

Tulowitzki helped guide the Rockies to the World Series in 2007 as a 22-year-old rookie shortstop. He has finished in the top eight in the NL MVP voting three times, but injuries have famously kept him from landing high on the ballot annually.

He is the early favorite for NL MVP this season, hitting .355/.445/.637 in his first 299 plate appearances. In 943 career games, Tulowitzki has hit .299/.373/.518 with 173 home runs and 597 RBIs. He has ranked among the top six NL position players in WAR five times, not coincidentally each season he has been relatively healthy. At just 29, he ranks 37th among all active players with 37.3 WAR.
