Trea Turner Falls Triple Shy Of Second Consecutive Cycle

Apr 27, 2017 9:43 AM

Trea Turner finished a triple shy of the cycle on Wednesday, a day after he reached the accomplishment for the Washington Nationals.

"He's going to have a lot of cycles in his career. That's just who he is and type of player he is," Bryce Harper said. "He has a good chance to do that on any given night. If he played here, he'd probably do it a lot more."

Turner, 23, is hitting .326/.341/.628 in 11 games.

Noah Syndergaard Has Yet To Walk A Batter This Season

Apr 26, 2017 7:59 AM

Noah Syndergaard has been terrific through his first four starts this season, pitching to a 1.73 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 26 innings.

The New York Mets right-hander's average fastball velocity is 99.6 mph, but it is his control that has him chasing history.

He has yet to walk a batter in 2017 and only 16 pitchers (12 starters) have opened a season with more walk-less innings.

Syndergaard is scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves and with seven innings pitched without a walk, he would move into a tie for second-place on the all-time list. The leader, Pete Alexander of the Chicago Cubs, tossed 51 innings to begin the 1923 season without issuing a walk.

Mookie Betts Strikes Out For First Time In 129 PAs

Apr 20, 2017 7:41 AM

Mookie Betts struck out against Francisco Liriano of the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, ending a streak of 129 regular season plate appearances without a punch-out dating back to last September.

The streak was the longest in Major League Baseball since Juan Pierre went 147 plate appearances without a strikeout in 2004.

Eric Thames Hits Sixth Home Run In Five Games

Apr 19, 2017 9:20 AM

Eric Thames continued his hot streak on Monday, hitting his sixth home run in five games.

Thames' streak ties him with Jeromy Burnitz for the franchise's mark for consecutive games with a home run.

He has seven home runs this season, his first since returning to Major League Baseball from Korea.

"You've just got to ride the wave and enjoy it," Thames said. "There's always dark times around the corner, so you've just got to take it in stride."

Trey Mancini Ties Major League Rookie Home Run Record

Apr 17, 2017 8:15 AM

Trey Mancini went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs on Sunday afternoon, continuing a torrid start to his career.

Through the first 12 games of his career, dating back to last season, Mancini now has seven home runs and 14 RBIs. He is just the third player dating back to 1913 to go deep seven times in his first 12 career big league games, joining Trevor Story (2016) and Dino Restelli (1949).

"It's humbling to hear that, for sure. Especially with how many legends have played the game. To make your mark in any way is really neat," Mancini said. "I'm seeing the ball pretty well and I'm just trying my best. All I'm really focusing on is relaxing.

"Luckily everything else is taking care of itself. I know through the year there's going to have to be adjustments that I'll make."

Reds Off To Best Start Since 1990

Apr 13, 2017 8:13 AM

They are just nine games in, but the Cincinnati Reds are off to their best start since the 1990 season.

They are 7-2, their best start since they opened 1990 with nine straight wins. The Reds won the World Series that year.

"There's a much stronger sense of community on our team and some young guys that are seizing the opportunity," Bryan Price said. "We do have the group of young pitchers that we've been talking about the last couple of years. We're starting to see them get to the big leagues and perform. And that makes a difference."

Jason Heyward's Changed Swing Yielding Positive Results

Apr 14, 2017 7:46 AM

Much has been made of Jason Heyward's swing and the changes he made this offseason in an effort to increase his diminished production at the plate.

Heyward had an average exit velocity of 87.4 mph in 2016, ranking 282nd among 379 qualified hitters. He slashed .230/.306/.325 in 592 plate appearances.

The Chicago Cubs began helping Heyward revamp his swing shortly after the World Series, working to lower his hands and make his bat angle more vertical.

He struggled this spring, but has seen some positive results during the first week-plus of the season. His hard contact rate is up and his average exit velocity is on the rise. The sample size is small, but Heyward is hitting .296/.367/.370 in 30 plate appearances this season.

Joey Votto Swinging At Unusually High Rate Of Pitches

Apr 13, 2017 8:14 AM

Joey Votto is one of baseball's most patient hitters, but the Cincinnati Reds star has been swinging at a very high rate of pitches to begin the 2017 season.

Over the first week of the season, Votto has a 90.2% zone-swing rate. His career mark is just 68.5%.

Votto may be swinging more often on purpose in an effort to put the ball in play. When asked, Votto was secretive.

"You're asking me about my approach and my tactics," he said. "That's kind of personal. I wouldn't want to share the specifics when that could benefit the opposition."

Votto gifted assistant hitting coach Tony Jaramillo with a "P Double-i P" shirt, which translate to "Put It In Play," which may be a hint towards his differing approach.

Wil Myers Records First Cycle Of 2017

Apr 11, 2017 8:49 AM

Wil Myers recorded the first cycle of both his career and the 2017 season on Monday night as the San Diego Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-3.

Myers singled in the first, doubled in the third, homered in the sixth and tripled in the eighth to help the Padres win for the third time in four games.

He is just the second player to hit for the cycle in club history. Matt Kemp is the only other player to accomplish the feat with the Padres.

"Those moments don't happen very often," Andy Green said. "To see somebody get it, someone like Wil, kind of the cornerstone of your franchise, it's a lot of fun to watch."
