Big Papi Calls Out Price For HBP

Oct 6, 2014 9:19 PM

David Ortiz outraged that David Price hit him Friday night on the first pitch the lefty threw to the Red Sox slugger since he hit two homers off him in Game 2 of the ALDS last October, said he has lost all respect for Price.

"It's a war," Ortiz said after the Red Sox rallied for their fifth straight win and second walk-off in two nights. "It's on. Next time I see him, he better put his gloves on. I have no respect for him anymore."

Price, asked after the game whether he had hit Ortiz intentionally, said: "I've got to establish my fastball in. I had six lefties in that lineup, that's my favorite side of the plate to go to. Got to establish it in."

Hughes Credits Success To More Curves, Fewer Sliders

Oct 31, 2014 5:52 PM

Phil Hughes, who has always tinkered with his repertoire, is crediting his success this season with heavier use of curve balls and fewer sliders.

"My slider was kind of a pitch that got me out of some spots last year, I guess you could say," Hughes said, "but it definitely wasn't a quality pitch."

Hughes signed with the Minnesota Twins this past offseason after beginning his career with the New York Yankees.

A first-round pick in 2004, the right-hander has teamed a curve with his big fastball this year.

"I just started to think back about what type of pitcher I was at my best, whether that was in the minor leagues or when I first came up," Hughes said. "The curveball was always at the forefront of that. So that was kind of the reasoning behind going back to the curveball and scrapping the slider. I was just like, 'My curveball can be good; I know it can be good. I just have to work on it and focus on it and throw it.'"

Hughes, who had a 5.19 ERA last season, is 5-1 with a 3.23 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 61.1 innings (10 starts).

Should Mariners Go After Matt Kemp?

Oct 31, 2014 6:43 AM

Matt Kemp's time with the Los Angeles Dodgers has become cloudy.

Kemp is hitting .255/.317/.438 and his struggles defensively in center field have led Don Mattingly to play him at the corners.

David Schoenfield of ESPN writes that the Seattle Mariners may be a good fit for Kemp if the Dodgers decide to trade him.

"It makes a lot of sense and the Mariners are the team that should take a chance that Kemp, who turns 30 in September, still has a lot of good baseball left in him," he writes.

The New York Yankees are among the teams showing interest in Kendrys Morales, according to sources.

Morales remains a free agent and once the first day of baseball's amateur draft is complete next Thursday, a club can sign him without losing a high pick.

Mark Teixeira has missed New York's last three games with a wrist injury. Brian McCann was forced to make his first professional start at first base on Wednesday night.

The Yankees are also worried about Carlos Beltran, who is trying to avoid surgery to remove bone spurs in his right elbow.
