Brett Deciding On Role With Royals

Sep 25, 2014 4:09 PM

George Brett, who is serving as the interim hitting coach of the Royals, is undecided about his future.

Brett has been serving in the role for a month.

"Really," Brett said when reminded about the length of his stay. "Well, I'll probably meet with Dayton [Moore] when I get home."

Has Brett made a decision on continuing?

"No," he responded.

Is he having fun in the job?

"When we win," he said. "When you score runs and we win, it's always fun."

Bourjos Breaks Wrist Against Astros

Oct 19, 2014 2:32 AM

Peter Bourjos is headed to the disabled list with a broken wrist.

Bourjos suffered the fracture against the Astros on Saturday.

He said the injury is "non-displaced," meaning that he could theoretically play when the pain is manageable, but he is expected to miss at least two weeks.

"There'll be a DL time, and we'll see what the timeframe is," Mike Scioscia said. "Early indications are that it might be a shorter stint than we'd imagine because of where the fracture is. We're following the lead of our medical staff every step of the way."

Francoeur Designated For Assignment By Royals

Sep 13, 2014 12:07 PM

The Royals have designated Jeff Francoeur for assignment.

By designating the struggling Francoeur for assignment, the Royals cleared more playing time for David Lough and Jarrod Dyson.

"We wanted to get another infield bat up here, and Johnny Giavotella has been swinging the bat very well at Omaha and, obviously, with Dyson coming back and the way that David Lough played there wasn't much opportunity for Jeff to get in there as much as I think he needs to be in order to be effective," Dayton Moore said.

Phillies Liked Puig Before He Signed With Dodgers

Oct 31, 2014 3:02 PM

Yasiel Puig, who entered Saturday's game hitting .424 with four doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBIs and a .696 slugging percentage in 24 games, once received attention from the Phillies.

Puig defected from Cuba in June 2012 and signed a seven-year, $42 million contract with the Dodgers.

"We saw him and we liked him," Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "LA jumped up astronomically on him. Good for them; they did the right thing. It's a huge risk. It's paid off, so far."

Amaro said the Phillies also looked into other recent Cuban defectors like A's outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who signed a four-year, $36 million deal, and Cubs prospect Jorge Soler, who signed a nine-year, $30 million contract.

"We looked at them and had interesting conversations with their people," Amaro said. "But people decided it was worth the risk to go and throw big-time money at guys. You hope those things work out. Hideki Irabu didn't work out. [Jose] Contreras worked out on certain levels. [Rey] Ordonez. Dice-K [Daisuke Matsuzaka]. It's a risk."
