Braves Could Demote B.J. Upton

Oct 31, 2014 3:03 PM

The Braves have considered asking B.J. Upton if he would be willing to work out his struggles in the minor leagues.

After signing a five-year, $75 million deal with Atlanta, Upton is hitting just .146.

Fredi Gonzalez said that Upton has enough service time in the majors to refuse an assignment.

"In my own mind, you think about those things, but really I haven't gotten to that point," Gonzalez said. "I think there's some logistics -- contractual things and that sort of stuff -- that they might not be able to do it that easy."

Upton is hitless in the team's past seven games. He was out of the lineup Friday for the second straight night.

MLB, Union End Talks For International Draft

Oct 31, 2014 3:42 PM

Major League Baseball has abandoned its attempt to start an international draft of amateur players in 2014.

The decision likely pushes the matter back to collective bargaining for the labor contract that will start in 2017.

Under the five-year labor deal agreed to in November 2011, the sides held discussions about a draft and MLB had the right to inform the union by Saturday if it planned to start one next year.

Zimmermann Won't Discuss Extension During Season

Oct 31, 2014 10:38 AM

Jordan Zimmermann told the Nationals this spring that he would not discuss a potential contract extension during the season.

Zimmermann will be eligible for free agency after the 2015 season.

"We talked a little bit in spring training," Zimmermann said. "My agent and I said once the season starts, we're going to wait until after the season. Hopefully, we'll maybe spring something up at the end of the season or going into next season or something.

"I'd be interested, see what they have to say. At the end of the day, it's got to be the right deal for me. I'm not just going to take a deal that's team friendly. It's got to be fair."

Peavy Was Nearly Traded To Cubs In 2008

Dec 8, 2014 9:00 PM

Jake Peavy was very nearly traded from the Padres to the Cubs in the winter of 2008.

"I think it was as close as anything could possibly be without happening," Peavy said.

At the very last minute, the deal broke apart.

"It was going to happen, and then it was a few days where we were just waiting on the announcement. They had to get a few things done here and there, and it was going to be a done deal," Peavy added.

At the time, Peavy was considered the one missing piece that could put the Cubs over the top.

The framework of the trade was agreed upon by Cubs general manager Jim Hendry and Padres general manager Kevin Towers. The Braves and Orioles also got involved in what could have been a four-team trade.

Word is that Cubs owner Sam Zell sent a message to Hendry at the last moment saying he wouldn't take on the $63 million remaining on Peavy's contract.
