Jun 5, 2014 7:28 AM

The Cardinals and catcher Yadier Molina have agreed to terms on a multiyear extension, according to a report. The deal is believed to be worth $75 million over five years. Molina, who is in the final year of his current contract, said last week that he was willing to continue negotiations this spring and that he "would like to work something out and try to stay" in St. Louis.

Marlins right fielder Mike Stanton now wants to be known as "Giancarlo" Stanton. With spring training cranking up and Stanton touted as a future home-run champion, he said he prefers Giancarlo. That is now the way he's identified on Miami's roster. That's also the name on his paycheck and above his locker.

Miguel Tejada, who won an MVP with the Athletics much earlier in his career, is trying to get a job with the team. "Tell (general manager) Billy (Beane) to give me a call," Tejada told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I don't want big money. I just want to play." Tejada, who will turn 38 on May 25, said he would accept a minor league deal. Oakland is in a bind in the infield after third baseman Scott Sizemore suffered a season-ending ACL tear last weekend.

Howard Treated For Infection On Surgical Wound

Oct 31, 2014 3:00 PM

Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard had a procedure Monday to clean out an infection around the sutures in his surgically repaired Achilles tendon. The procedure was performed in Baltimore by Dr. Mark Myerson, who also performed Howard's original surgery in October. The infection was unusual in cases such as Howard's, but the examination revealed that structurally, the tendon itself was "intact and not compromised."

Jeter: Valentine 'Must Be Bored' To Take Jabs At Yankees

Oct 31, 2014 11:38 AM

Derek Jeter is "indifferent" to recent comments made by Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine about the Yankees. "I'm indifferent, really," Jeter said. "I don't know Bobby well enough to know what he's trying to do. I could care less. I guess that's the best way to put it." Speaking to reporters in Red Sox camp on Tuesday, Valentine questioned whether the Yankees really practiced the famous "flip play" Jeter made at home plate against the Oakland A's in Game 3 of the 2001 ALDS that caught Jeremy Giambi at the plate, as Jeter has always maintained, and implied that the fabled play, which protected a Yankees 1-0 lead, was in fact a misplay. "I think [Jeter] was out of position," Valentine said. "And the ball gets [Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally." Jeter seemed more bemused than annoyed at the assertions. "We do practice it, but not the flip home," Jeter said. "But who cares? Why are we talking about this? He must be bored over there, huh? I don't understand."

Yankees Only Handing Sabathia, Kuroda Spots In Rotation

Sep 25, 2014 2:57 AM

Joe Girardi has indicated that Hiroki Kuroda will join CC Sabathia in New York's starting rotation. The rest of the spots are to be determined. "We've got six guys for five spots ... and you really can look at it as, you've got CC and you've got Kuroda," Girardi said. "So, you've got four guys for three spots." Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia are in the mix for the remaining three spots. "Sometimes the five that you leave with aren't the five that you end up with," Girardi said. "We've got time, and there's no rush. You're going to go with what you feel are your five guys."

Rendon Impressing Nationals, Says He's Comfortable At Second

Oct 31, 2014 7:23 AM

Anthony Rendon has turned heads this spring in camp with the Nationals, but there is one small problem. Rendon is a third baseman and Washington just signed Ryan Zimmerman to a contract that could reach $150 million in value. The Nationals drafted Rendon with the sixth overall pick out of Rice last year. "They had to lock him down," Rendon said of Zimmerman. "He's done great for this organization. He's a great player. Why wouldn't you want to lock him down?" For now, Rendon will alternate between third base, shortstop and second base during spring training. Rendon feels comfortable at both second base, where he played last year at Rice upon returning from a shoulder injury, and shortstop, where he played through high school.

Victorino Willing To Forgo Free Agency

Oct 23, 2014 8:39 PM

Shane Victorino, who can become a free agent after the 2012 season, said last week that he doesn't "plan on going anywhere." When asked to expand on the comment, the Philadelphia center fielder clarified things a bit. "What that statement was saying," Victorino said, "was that I'm willing to give up free agency. A lot of guys won't. In the game of baseball, free agency is what every major league player dreams of. You want to maximize your value, and of course I do, too. But what's important to me is, I want to be here. I love playing here. My family loves the city. I love the city. So when I made that statement, that's what I meant."

Blue Jays Won't Add A Guaranteed Contract

Jun 16, 2014 7:39 PM

There have been rumors that the Blue Jays may be interested in a right-handed slugger like Vladimir Guerrero or Magglio Ordonez, but that doesn't appear to be the case. "Right now, we don't have any talks going on with anyone," Alex Anthopoulos said. "But if somebody were to fall in our lap, would we take a look at it? Yes." The general manager later defined "fall in our lap" this way: "If someone were to say, 'I want to come in to camp on a minor league deal,' we'd say we're open to [bringing in] pretty much anybody. But in terms of adding a free agent on a guaranteed contract, we won't be doing that."
