Orioles Unlikely To Land Aroldis Chapman

Sep 17, 2014 6:48 PM

The Orioles met with Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman on Friday in New York City. "He's willing and interested to come and visit Baltimore," international scouting director John Stockstill told the Baltimore Sun. The Orioles are interested, but management is unlikely to pursue Chapman strongly if his reported asking price -- between $40 million and $60 million -- is accurate.

Cubs Deny Bradley-For-Wells Talks

Sep 20, 2014 10:02 AM

The Cubs are strongly denying that they have discussed trading Milton Bradley to the Blue Jays for Vernon Wells. However, Chicago has admitted to discussing potential trades with Toronto. Bradley had two years left on his contract at $21.5 million. Wells has five years left at $98 million, including $23 million each in the last two years of the contract.

Sabathia Will Start Game 4 On Short Rest

Sep 1, 2014 7:47 PM

The Yankees have announced that, as expected, CC Sabathia will pitch on short rest in Game 4 against the Phillies. Game 4 of the World Series will be Sunday night in Philadelphia. "CC has pitched extremely well for us this year," Girardi said before Game 3. "We wanted to see how he came out today, how physically he came out today, and he physically feels good." Girardi added that A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte could pitch on short rest in Games 4 and 5. "There is no baseball after the World Series for four or five months, so there will be plenty of time to rest," Girardi said. "A.J. was pretty good on short rest last year, if you look up his numbers. He actually shut us down on short rest last year. And they physically feel good."

Hamels Looked Up To Pettitte As Kid

Oct 26, 2014 5:53 PM

Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels will start against Yankees lefty Andy Pettitte in Saturday night's Game 3 of the World Series. Hamels, 25, looked up to Pettitte, 37, as a kid. "Andy Pettitte and Tom Glavine, those were the guys I emulated growing up when I was a little kid," Hamels told Yahoo! Sports. "They were always in the playoffs. I always got to watch them. They always pitched big games and they won. "Pettitte has been very effective for a long time, and he's always the kind of guy I've looked at and hoped to be one day in his shoes. Now I'm here and I'm going to be able to face him in the World Series and he's on the Yankees again. So it's just kind of a big game."

Right fielder Nick Swisher is in the lineup for the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series. New York manager Joe Girardi didn't start the struggling Swisher against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the World Series, which the Yankees won. With the series tied at a game apiece, the scene shifts to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Wells To Cubs?

Sep 5, 2014 7:25 AM

A possible trade between the Blue Jays and Cubs involving Vernon Wells and Milton Bradley reportedly "has legs." "It's early on, but we think this one has some legs," a Cubs official told the Toronto Sun. "But they aren't the only team we are talking with." Bradley, who was suspended by the Cubs near the end of the season, has two years and $21 million left on his contract. Wells has an unsightly six years and $107 million remaining on his deal, including the final $8.5 million portion of his signing bonus.

Yankees Prepping CC, A.J. On Short Rest

Sep 20, 2014 3:42 AM

The Yankees are looking to take control of the World Series by preparing CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett to pitch on short rest. Joe Girardi could use Sabathia in Sunday's Game 4 and Burnett in Monday's Game 5 with both pitchers going on three days' rest. "We have had [Sabathia] prepare [to start Game 4] because it would be silly to not do that and then say, 'Uh-oh, CC, you are starting Game 4,' " Girardi admitted to the New York Post. Chad Gaudin is New York's only other option to pitch against Philadelphia's Joe Blanton in Game 4. If Sabathia doesn't start Game 4, he'll take the mound in Game 5, which pushes Burnett back to Game 6. That would allow New York to either start Sabathia on short rest in a possible Game 7 or go with veteran Andy Pettitte.

Matsui Unlikely To See Field In Philly

Sep 19, 2014 12:28 PM

Hideki Matsui will be limited to pinch-hitting duties as the World Series shifts to Philadelphia. The Yankees designated hitter hasn't played in the outfield in more than a year because of his troublesome knees. "I can't tell you what my confidence level would be," he told the New York Post through interpreter Roger Kahlon. "My knees are pretty calmed down right now, in that sense I feel pretty good. "I haven't been in the outfield in more than a year. I have to see how I feel once I get out there." Yankees manager Joe Girardi doesn't want to lose Matsui's bat, but admitted that it would be tough to put him out in the field. "As productive as he's been this year, you don't want to lose his bat," said Girardi. "I'm going to watch, see how he moves around and see if we think it's physically possible. "If we can't do it, we'll use him to pinch hit. It might be a situation where you might think about a double switch at high time."

Hamels To Add Breaking Ball For 2010

Sep 28, 2014 8:28 AM

Cole Hamels has struggled this season and the Phillies are going to help him add a breaking ball to his arsenal. His curveball has been inconsistent this season, which has made his fastball-changeup combination too predictable. "Putting another pitch in the back of the hitter's mind can only help me," Hamels told the Philadelphia Inquirer. He doesn't intend on removing his curveball, but rather working on another breaking pitch in spring training.
