Wainwright Doesn't Want DH Rule In NL

Apr 29, 2015 8:18 AM

Adam Wainwright suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon while stumbling out of the batter's box recently, but the St. Louis Cardinals right-hander doesn't want to see the designated hitter in the National League.

Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer, who spent the past five seasons in the AL with the Detroit Tigers, reignited the oft-debated topic when he said that both leagues should play by the same rules and that fans don't want to see a pitcher "swinging a wet newspaper."

Wainwright, however, said his injury shouldn't be the catalyst for change.

"I couldn't disagree more," Wainwright said. "I love Max ... but I just think baseball is a National League game. I wish both leagues would convert to National League baseball. I understand why people would say that, but you can't point to another instance, almost, that the pitcher got hurt, whether or not it was their Achilles, doing that kind of thing.

"The strategy and the game itself in the National is just a better game, in my opinion. I hope that people don't look at this -- which I know they already are -- and think we should switch to a DH for pitchers. I think baseball is a beautiful game and I hope it doesn't change too much." Wainwright will have surgery later this week, likely Thursday, and recovery time is generally nine to 12 months.

"I could have been carrying my daughter up the stairs," Wainwright said. "So, outlaw carrying your daughter up the stairs. Outlaw covering first. Outlaw fielding a bunt. "It was a fluke thing and baseball needs to stay exactly where it is."

Cardinals Will Try To Replace Wainwright From Within

Apr 28, 2015 9:00 AM

Adam Wainwright may miss the remainder of the season with an Achilles injury, but the St. Louis Cardinals have no plans to swing a major trade.

John Mozeliak says the club's first move will be to replace Wainwright from within the organization.

"If you get into May and early June and you don't feel like the internal options are the solution you were hoping for then you might have to look outside," the general manager said.

Tyler Lyons, Tim Cooney and Zach Petrick could all be short-term options to fill Wainwright's spot in the rotation. Marco Gonzales and Jaime Garcia, who are both injured, could help later on.
