Steven Matz Unlikely To Be Ready For Opener

Mar 30, 2017 8:35 AM

Steven Matz is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day because of tenderness in his left elbow, the New York Mets have announced.

"He's being examined today," Collins said Wednesday. "We should know more, but we don't plan on having him pitch the next few days."

Matz is expected to have an MRI. The left-hander threw on the side on Monday and Tuesday and was still feeling pain.

"Nothing's changed over the last couple of days," Collins said. "It's just that the last two days he played catch, and he still feels it, so we thought it would be important to have him looked at."

Matz was projected to be New York's No. 5 starter.

Jeurys Familia Gets 15-Game Suspension After Domestic Violence Charge

Mar 31, 2017 8:10 AM

Jeurys Familia, who was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge that was later dismissed, has been suspended 15 games by Major League Baseball.

The incident took place Oct. 31 in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

"Mr. Familia and his wife cooperated fully throughout the investigation, including submitting to in-person interviews with MLB's Department of Investigations," Rob Manfred said in a statement. "... The evidence reviewed by my office does not support a determination that Mr. Familia physically assaulted his wife, or threatened her or others with physical force or harm, on October 31, 2016. Nevertheless, I have concluded that Mr. Familia's overall conduct that night was inappropriate, violated the Policy, and warrants discipline."

A first-time All-Star in 2016, Familia led the Major Leagues with 51 saves for the New York Mets.

Cespedes Clears The Air, Wants World Series Ring

Mar 28, 2017 8:08 AM

Interviews from earlier this month had Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes angling for the MVP as his primary goal. That's not his focus, he said.

"I want to clear that up because I know that was mentioned from a few interviews," Cespedes said through an interpreter on Monday. "The MVP thing, that's obviously a goal, but that's not really what I go out there in mind with."

"What I go out in mind with is helping the team win," Cespedes said. "The team comes first. I like to prepare and will continue to prepare as if it [the MVP] is one of my goals. But the team comes first, then [MVP]. If that comes, great. If not, so be it."

"We know we can win a World Series," he said.

Mets To Assign Tim Tebow To Class A Columbia

Mar 21, 2017 7:12 AM

The New York Mets told Tim Tebow on Monday that they plan to assign him to the Class A Columbia (SC) Fireflies of the South Atlantic League.

"Sending him to a full-season club is what we hoped to be able to do," Sandy Alderson said. "And based on what he's done in spring training, and his whole body of work since last fall, we feel comfortable with him going to Columbia."

Tebow is hitting .200 (4-for-20) in seven games for the Mets in spring training. The Mets have been playing him in the outfield.

"I am excited about continuing the journey. I learned so much this spring working with T.C. [Terry Collins], Kevin Long, and Tom Goodwin," Tebow said in a statement. "I hear so many good things about the City of Columbia. I hear the stadium is great. I look forward to coming there to make an impact on the field and the community."

Tim Tebow Goes 0-For-3 With 2 Strikeouts In Spring Debut

Mar 9, 2017 7:08 AM

Tim Tebow, who hit eighth and served as designated hitter, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his spring debut with the New York Mets on Wednesday.

"I think I learned a lot of things," Tebow said. "Just getting in there and seeing pitches for the first time, competing. I mean, I felt OK, put some good swings when I swung. You just learn. It was the first day for me, getting a chance to compete, and I'll learn a lot from it."

The Mets have said Tebow will begin the season in the minors, but haven't revealed at what level.

Terry Collins said he would like to see Tebow take a more aggressive approach at the plate when he plays for the Mets again Friday in a split-squad game against the Houston Astros in Port St. Lucie.
