Weeks Doesn't Expect To Remain With Brewers

Oct 1, 2014 5:36 PM

Rickie Weeks, who has spent nearly 10 years with the club, doesn't expect the Milwaukee Brewers to pick up his $11.5 million option for 2015.

Weeks didn't make a final appearance for Milwaukee on Sunday, the team's final game of the season.

"It's just one of those things where what's done is done," Weeks said. "We had a good conversation earlier this morning with (GM) Doug (Melvin). I told the manager if the time permitted itself during the game to put me out there, OK. If not, so be it.

"Life still goes on. It's not like this is the end of all (things). I'm the type of person that I move on. That's the way it is. I don't think I'm going to be here next year. It's just for me to go out there and move forward with my life."

Ryan Braun To Have Thumb Surgery

Sep 29, 2014 8:40 AM

Ryan Braun is scheduled to have surgery this week to fix a nagging nerve problem near his right thumb, according to an ESPN.com report.

The injury contributed to Braun having one of the least productive full seasons of his career.

Braun said Sunday the rare procedure involved going into the thumb and freezing the nerve. The problem, which carried over from the 2013 season, affected his swing.

Brewers Owner Directs Anger At Players

Sep 28, 2014 5:33 PM

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio directed his anger over his team's fade from contention at the players Saturday.

"Frankly, I'm disappointed in the team, disappointed in the guys," Attanasio said. "They're better than this, and they didn't show it."

Attanasio and GM Doug Melvin held a 20-minute news conference Saturday near the Brewers' dugout at Miller Park to discuss the season. Attanasio said Melvin will return for 2015, while the fates of manager Ron Roenicke and his coaching staff have not been decided.

Brewers Could Move Braun To First Base

Oct 31, 2014 9:19 PM

The Milwaukee Brewers need to fill a hole at first base and Ryan Braun is an option.

"Well, we've talked about it," Ron Roenicke said.

Braun has already moved from shortstop at the University of Miami to third base, left field and right field during his years with the Brewers.

Milwaukee is reluctant to move him because he still runs well and has a superior throwing arm, traits that would be wasted at first base.

"I haven't talked enough with Doug [Melvin, Milwaukee's general manager] about it to even know if there would be a reason to [move Braun]," Roenicke said. "I still think he is a good defender in the outfield. Learning the new position, I thought he picked up pretty fast, and I think he'll continue to get better in right.

"So it's just what the needs are. I know we have [Gerardo] Parra over here now, and we'll figure out what to do with him next year."

Brewers Official Bruce Seid Dies

Oct 31, 2014 9:21 PM

Milwaukee Brewers scouting director Bruce Seid, 53, died suddenly Tuesday night while visiting his family in Las Vegas.

Milwaukee named Seid their director of amateur scouting on Nov. 11, 2008, after his predecessor, Jack Zduriencik, left to become the general manager of the Seattle Mariners.

Seid joined the Brewers as an amateur scout in 1997, spending nine seasons as an area scout and two as a regional cross-checker before his promotion to director.

Broxton Wasn't Expecting Trade From Reds

Sep 17, 2014 4:50 AM

Jonathan Broxton was surprised to hear that the Cincinnati Reds had traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers.

"I didn't see it coming at all, especially with an extra year (remaining on his contract) in there," the reliever said.

"I went out and packed up, and came on."

It's also a bit odd for two teams in the same division to swing a deal so close to the playoffs. The Brewers are in a race with the Cardinals for the National League Central title.

"Having a chance to go to the postseason should be a lot of fun," Broxton said. "It's just the business. I'm going to go out there and be a professional and try to get guys out any way I can."

Brewers Minor Leaguer Plays All Nine Positions

Sep 12, 2014 9:35 AM

Milwaukee Brewers prospect Nathan Orf played all nine positions for the Class A Brevard County Manatees on Sunday.

A natural infielder, Orf began the game at catcher and ended it after recording an out in his first ever professional appearance as a pitcher.

"[Manager Joe Ayrault] just said he was gonna try to get me all nine, he had to make a phone call to see if I could get on the mound, and I think he had to plead with somebody just to get me one batter and nothing more," Orf said. "I appreciate him. He's been great for me all year and a boost in confidence when things aren't going great. He's been a great manager to play for."

In order, Orf played catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field, center field, right field and finally pitcher. He even had a brief stint as the first base coach.
