Angels Will Continue To Look For Offensive Help

May 29, 2015 8:56 PM

The Los Angeles Angels added to their bench this week when they acquired Kirk Nieuwenhuis, but they won't stop there.

The Angels led the American League in runs scored last season, but they currently rank next to last.

"We'll be looking for the remainder of the trade season," Jerry Dipoto said.

The OPS of every regular player, including Mike Trout, is lower this year than last.

"If it were up to one guy, we've got as good a one guy as anybody," Dipoto said. "It takes a lineup to score runs, not one guy.

"There were no warning signs that these guys were going to go out and start throwing up seasons that were 25% below what they would ordinarily do. At some point, the other shoe will drop, and we'll start seeing some offense."

Draft Prospect Ties Mike Trout's Home Run Record

May 27, 2015 7:44 AM

Ashton Bardzell, a senior at New Jersey's Ramsey High School, has tied Mike Trout's state record for home runs in a season with 18.

Bardzell could be selected in MLB's First-Year Player Draft next month.

"He's the man. He's the best player in the league right now," Bardzell said. "So I mean, It's an honor."

Trout attended Millville High School in New Jersey.

Angels, Phillies Have Discussed Revere Trade

May 21, 2015 7:01 AM

Ben Revere may become the odd man out in the outfield for the Philadelphia Phillies and a trade seems likely.

The Phillies have discussed a possible trade with the Los Angeles Angels in recent weeks, according to sources.

The Angels have been scouting Revere and like him, but compensation hasn't been agreed on.

Revere is making $4.1 million this season and will not become a free agent until after the 2017 season.

Matt Joyce Scratched From Lineup After Late Arrival

May 20, 2015 7:47 AM

Matt Joyce wasn't in the lineup for the Los Angeles Angels on Monday afternoon because he arrived late to the park.

"I assumed we had a night game since it was a day game Sunday and assumed we had a night game Monday since we normally always do," Joyce said. "By the time I realized it was a day game it was a little late."

The Angels followed a standard Sunday afternoon game in Baltimore with a more unusual series-opening Monday matinee game in Toronto.

"It was a mistake," Joyce said. "It's definitely something that will never happen again. Obviously I felt terrible about it."

Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton said the Angels front office prevented him from talking to owner Arte Moreno.

Hamilton, who signed a five-year, $125M deal, hit just .255 with 31 homers and 123 RBI in two seasons with the Angels before they traded him to the Rangers in April for cash considerations.

Ben Revere Aware Of Rumors, Angels Could Be Destination

May 15, 2015 7:47 AM

Ben Revere, who has already been part of one trade in his career, has been aware of recent rumors since the Philadelphia Phillies began the season.

Revere knows he could be one of the veterans that the Phillies trade off before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

The Phillies will have a crowded group of outfielders when Cody Asche and Domonic Brown join the club. Asche is learning to play left field while Brown returns from injury and ineffectiveness.

According to a recent report, the Los Angeles Angels are one team interested in Revere.

"I know it's a business," Revere said. "I know we need some guys to help this program out, this organization out. If I do, it's a part of the game. But the only thing I'm trying to do is help the team win. I'm not worrying about it. If it does happen, it happens. If it doesn't, I'm going to try to bring some W's to this team."

Mike Trout Is Hitting High Fastballs Better

May 14, 2015 10:34 AM

The one knock on Mike Trout in his first few seasons was his tendency to swing and miss at high fastballs.

The Kansas City Royals exposed the one hole in Trout's game at the plate during the playoffs to great success last October.

Trout has gone after roughly 40% of high fastballs over the 2014 and 2015 seasons, but his contact rate has changed significantly. The Los Angeles Angels outfielder had a 74% contact rate on high fastballs last season, but that percentage has jumped to 89% this year.

He swung through 120 high fastballs in 2014, but through Monday night he had swung through just nine. It's early in the season, but it seems as though Trout has taken a significant spot forward.

Trout had a .356 slugging percentage on high fastballs last season, but is slugging .784 on such pitches in 2015.

Keith Law Lists Brendan Rodgers As Top Draft Prospect

May 8, 2015 4:22 PM

Keith Law, who works in scouting for ESPN, has updated his list of the top 100 prospects ahead of next month's MLB Draft.

"This year's draft class is indeed one of the weakest in recent memory, not just at the top of the first round, but also in specific areas that are usually deeper, such as college starting pitching and catchers of any stripe. There is, however, a lot of depth in the middle infield," writes Law.

Brendan Rodgers, a shortstop out of Lake Mary High School (FL), is ranked first on Law's list.
