Indians Send Trevor Bauer To Bullpen

Mar 30, 2016 4:49 PM

The Cleveland Indians are moving Trevor Bauer to the bullpen.

Bauer made 30 starts for the Indians last season and was projected to be a member of the rotation once again.

Terry Francona named Cody Anderson and Josh Tomlin the club's No. 4 and No. 5 starters behind Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar.

"We still expect all six guys to make a lot of meaningful starts," Chris Antonetti said. "We used 11 starting pitchers last year. There are pitchers beyond these six that will make meaningful starts. To start the season, this was the way we felt was best for the team. Building on the success that Josh and Cody both had in the second half of the season, and what they were able to carry forward in the off season and spring, really led us down this path.

"It was a difficult decision, but the way we look at it is that we are in a pretty good spot to have six starters we feel so good about."

Michael Brantley Won't Be Ready For Opening Day

Mar 28, 2016 6:55 AM

Michael Brantley will not be in the lineup for the Cleveland Indians on opening day despite making major progress following offseason shoulder surgery.

Brantley had targeted the April 4 opener against the Boston Red Sox as his return date, but Terry Francona said Sunday that he is not quite ready and will not be in left field on opening day.

"We will let this thing calm down a little bit, then ramp him back up," Francona said. "He's not going to start the season with us as our starting left fielder. He will certainly travel with us. So if that's the case, let's give him a chance to be healthy for the whole year."

Brantley, who underwent surgery in November, reported some soreness in his right shoulder after playing in only two exhibition games.

He hit .310/.379/.480 with 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 529 at-bats last season.

Joba Chamberlain Makes Indians' Roster

Mar 28, 2016 7:23 AM

Joba Chamberlain has made the Cleveland Indians as a non-roster invitee.

"He accepted the challenge," Terry Francona said Saturday. "He came out in January and been a teammate since Day 1. He has really thrown the ball well this spring. He likes to compete and wants to win. Joba will be a real valuable piece."

In eight innings this spring, Chamberlain has given up seven hits and three runs. He walked five and struck out seven and has an ERA of 3.38.

Chamberlain spent last season with Detroit, Toronto and Kansas City.

Indians Prospect Hits 108 MPH During Drill

Mar 18, 2016 7:19 AM

Cleveland Indians prospect Casey Weathers, 30, hit 107.8 mph on a radar gun during a pitching drill.

"I got really fortunate in the last year," says Weathers, who battled bad luck and injuries for the better part of five seasons. "I basically got signed by the Indians off a pull-down video."

The "pull-down" drill is the end of the second phase of pitching guru Alan Jaeger's long-toss regimen. After extending to 300-foot distances, pitchers come down to a 30-foot distance and usually crow hop while throwing into a sock net.

"I played outfield growing up, so I do more of an outfielders throw," Weathers said of the drill. "You try to beat your score every time and get as much velocity as you can.

"I can definitely get some translation to the mound as far as getting arm speed, but it's all about the confidence for me. I've been through all these injuries, and now I can throw a ball at max intent at very high output and I'm fine. That's the biggest confidence thing for me. I can prepare my body to do the things I need to do to compete during the season."

Tyler Naquin May Start In Center Field For Indians

Mar 10, 2016 6:57 AM

With Michael Brantley expected to miss the first month of the season, Tyler Naquin is vying to be the starting center fielder for the Cleveland Indians on Opening Day.

Abraham Almonte was the leading candidate for the job until he was suspended 80 games for failing a drug test that reveled performance-enhancing drugs.

Baseball America ranks Naquin as the No. 6 prospect in Cleveland's system. He is believed to be in competition for a spot in center with Collin Cowgill, Joey Butler, Will Venable, Robbie Grossman, Michael Choice and Shane Robinson.

"You can't just sit here and say, 'He needs to hit .300, he needs to do this,'" Terry Francona said. "Some of it is that guys in that situation, obviously they need to have a good showing in camp. I think that's stating the obvious. But then it needs to fit, too."
