Return to MLB Prospect index Jake Arrieta - RHP Jake Arrieta Scouting Report - Arrieta was selected in the fifth round of the 2007 MLB Draft. He was also drafted in 2005 in the 26th round by Milwaukee, but didn't sign and attended Texas Christian. He also was drafted in the 31st round of the 2004 draft by Cincinnati but instead went to Weatherford Junior College. - Born March 6th, 1986 and is 6'4", 225 lbs. - The Orioles signed Arrieta to a $1.1 bonus, which was a record for a player selected in the fifth round. - Features a fastball in the low to mid 90's with good control. Also throws a slider, change and curve. The slider has the best potential, but like his change-up it is very inconsistent. - Arrieta struck out 120 batters in 113 innings, while walking 51 during the 2008 season in high Single-A in the Carolina League. He had a 2.87 ERA and a SWHIP of 0.212. That is an excellent SWHIP for the major league level, but that figures to at least double when he does reach the bigs. His command is not horrible, but is the biggest thing separating his projection from a number three or four starter to a front of the rotation pitcher. - Was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Year in 2008. - Ranked 52nd by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009. - Ranked 67th by Baseball America in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009.
