Over the next few weeks RealGMBaseball will be holding our 2014 Major League Baseball 'Be The GM' Contest to determine which player would be the best selection to build a franchise around.

The contest, which is being brought to you by the Original Retro Brand, is described and previewed here: RealGM's 2014 'Be The GM' Contest. You'll want to check out the link for rules on how to enter to win a $50 Retro Brand gift card and to see the full contest schedule.

Paul Goldschmidt of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies are featured in Wednesday's matchup. Voting will extend through the end of the first round.

Goldschmidt was an All-Star for the first time and finished second in the National League MVP voting in 2013, just his second full season in the Major Leagues. He hit .302/.401/.551 with 36 home runs and 125 RBIs, leading the NL in slugging, home runs, RBIs and on-base plus slugging.

While 2013 was clearly his best season thus far, the numbers aren't all that much better than his slash line over 1,734 career plate appearances -- .291/.373/.518. If he matches last season's home run total, he'll finish 2014 with 100 career dingers. Goldschmidt ranked third among NL position players in WAR during his near-MVP season, behind only Andrew McCutchen, who topped him for the award, and Carlos Gomez.

Tulowitzki is three years older than Goldschmidt, but has been in the Major Leagues since 2006. He helped guide the Rockies to the World Series in 2007 as a 22-year-old rookie shortstop. He has finished in the top eight in the NL MVP voting three times, but injuries have famously kept him from landing high on the ballot annually.

He is the clear favorite for NL MVP early this season, hitting .353/.451/.674 in his first 224 plate appearances. In 925 career games, Tulowitzki has hit .298/.372/.518 with 170 home runs and 590 RBIs. He has ranked among the top six NL position players in WAR five times, not coincidentally each season he has been relatively healthy. At just 29, he ranks 25th among all active players with 36.8 WAR.
