Over the next few weeks RealGM Baseball will be holding our 2014 Major League Baseball 'Be The GM' Contest to determine which player would be the best selection to build a franchise around.

Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Michael Wacha of the St. Louis Cardinals are featured in Monday's matchup. Voting will extend through the end of the first round.

It's hard to believe that McCutchen, the reigning National League MVP, is just 27 years old. A career .297/.384/.488 hitter, he has been the face of a baseball resurgence in Pittsburgh. An All-Star for three consecutive years, he appears headed for Minneapolis next month (.307/.427/.470).

He is an above-average hitter, but McCutchen is one of the most valuable players in the game today when you consider the complete package. He has ranked in the top three among NL WAR leaders in each of the last two seasons. The outfielder ranks 35th among all active players in WAR with 30.5 over his 789 games.

Wacha, who will turn 23 in July, emerged last fall thanks to a great postseason run. The MVP of the NLCS, he made five October starts for the Cardinals going 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA, 33 strikeouts and 12 walks in 30.2 innings. He allowed one run in 21 pre-World Series innings before surrendering eight in 9.2 innings against the Red Sox.

The regular season has been strong for the right-hander as well. In 27 appearances, 21 starts, Wacha has a 2.61 ERA, 1.080 WHIP and 140 strikeouts over 138 innings. He currently ranks sixth in ERA and seventh in strikeouts per nine innings in the NL. He is comfortable on the mound, but is younger than all but nine players in the senior circuit.
